The Problem: An Outdated Built-In with No Clear Purpose
In many homes (especially those with character) built-ins are underutilized or outdated. That was the case in this room: a dated built-in awkwardly situated next to a dramatic, full-stone fireplace. The homeowners wanted to add a TV, but balancing that with the existing fireplace without overwhelming the room was tricky.
Here are before of the space.
The space lacked warmth, symmetry, and function. But it had one thing going for it: great potential.

In this renovation breakdown from #ProjectSimpsons (or as we call it, #ProjectWildestDream), we’ll walk you through:
How we reimagined an old built-in into a cozy library wall
Our custom triple-arch millwork design
Functional measurements to guide your own remodel

Rebalancing the Room with Intentional Design

The key to making this room work was to create a calm, clean focal point that wouldn’t fight with the stone fireplace. Our approach: simplify the cabinetry, soften the lines, and introduce just the right amount of layered detail. This way the bold focal point will be the Frame TV integrated Gallery Wall.

We started by designing three custom arches to echo the curved opening in the adjacent dining room. Repeating architectural moments like this helps a home feel cohesive and considered.
Behind the arches, we used a soft, patterned wallpaper as a subtle backdrop to add just enough texture and interest to elevate the built-in without distracting the eye.
Design Details & Measurements
To help you plan your own built-in or library wall, here are the core specs:
Shelf heights: Most are ~12”, with a 15” opening on the lower level for taller items or art.
Drywall column separations: 3” wide between each arch.
Cabinet fronts: Skinny shaker in a crisp white finish.
Countertop: White oak for natural warmth and material contrast.
Hardware: Brushed brass knobs—elegant and timeless.
Lighting: A Thoughtful Library Touch

We typically love incorporating an art light here for that classic built-in moment—but this time, we chose something different: pivoting spotlights in Patina Brass and Bronze. These lights feel like they belong in an actual library. Functional, directional, and far more elevated than basic recessed lighting.
They add both mood and task lighting, and visually anchor the top of the arches without stealing focus.
