Client: Could you design a basement that doesn't look like a basement?
Us: SAY NO MORE!
KITCHEN RENOVATION INSPIRATION: A European Cottage Kitchen… in the Basement? YES!

Here we will give you the BEST Features & Sources & Reasons and MORE for this beautiful unfinished basement kitchen construction! Are you ready?
When we started designing the Martha Project basement, the feeling we want to create & goal was simple but powerful: Slow Down. Settle In. Connect.
This busy family of four wanted a lower level that didn’t feel like a basement at all. Instead, they imagined a space that felt like a European cottage getaway tucked inside their suburban Atlanta home.
So we designed exactly that.
While technically a basement, the scope of this project includes a full secondary living experience, a kitchen with café seating and an interior window detail, custom built-ins with arched niches, a family room with a fireplace, dry bar, game lounge, powder room with green checkerboard floors and color-drenched walls, a spa-like full bath, guest bedroom, and even a home gym.
It truly functions like a cozy retreat within the home.
This blog is the first in our 5-part Martha Project series, and today we’re starting with one of our favorite spaces: the Romantic European-inspired kitchen.
A Relaxed Yet Refined Basement Kitchen

Even though this kitchen lives in the basement, we designed it to feel intentional, layered, and charming.
The kind of place where you grab a pastry, pour coffee, and sit by the window.
The design balances contrast and softness: curved yet structured, textured yet smooth, bold yet calm.
Some of the elements that bring this relaxed European feel to life include:
A scalloped granite backsplash profile that creates a beautiful focal point on the range wall
Fluted sconces that add romantic lighting and softness
A mini shiplap wall for subtle cottage texture
A petite café table and chairs for morning coffee moments
A custom channeled bench cushion that feels both tailored and cozy
Because space is limited, we used compact appliances so the kitchen functions fully while keeping the footprint efficient.
The cabinetry is finished in a muted dove gray, with delicate trim details that give the kitchen a subtle cottage character without feeling overly ornate.
The result? A kitchen that honestly could pass as the main kitchen in the house.
Who believes this is a basement?
Because we certainly don’t.
The Café Corner We Love Most
One of the design intentions was to create a little café moment inside the kitchen.
The pedestal oak table, café chairs, and window seating create a spot where the family can pause — whether it’s coffee in the morning, homework in the afternoon, or wine after the kids go to bed.
It’s small, but it carries the entire spirit of the project: slow living and connection.

5 Features We’re Completely Obsessed With
1. The Interior Kitchen Window
This was a unique design moment. Our clients wanted to be able to watch TV from the kitchen corner, so we incorporated an interior window that connects the kitchen and family room visually. It keeps the space feeling open and interactive.
2. The Curved & Channeled Bench
The custom curved bench with channeled performance fabric is equal parts beautiful and functional. It softens the kitchen and makes the café corner feel extra inviting.
3. The Scalloped Range Backsplash
The range wall is the star of the kitchen. We used Westchester honed granite with a custom scalloped backsplash profile to create drama, then softened the composition with Texas limestone above for organic movement.
4. The Sink Wall Shelving & Shiplap
To add a relaxed cottage layer, we designed open shelving with brass brackets over a subtle shiplap wall. It creates the perfect styling moment while keeping the space light.
5. The Pushed-Out Range Cabinets
The cabinets beside the range are pushed out 2–3 inches, which adds dimension, hides the range sides, and allows the scalloped detailing to extend onto the cabinetry for a cohesive look.
It’s a small architectural move that makes a big design impact.

A Basement That Feels Like a Getaway
The Martha Project proves that a basement doesn’t have to feel secondary. That’s why we called it #DreamBasement
With thoughtful planning, cozy architectural details, and intentional design choices, it can become a true extension of the home — or even a little retreat inside it.
And this romantic European-inspired kitchen is just the beginning.
In the next post of this series, we’ll take you inside the family room and fireplace moment, where the slow-down feeling continues.
