Open shelves are a hot trend in home decor, but they can be a bit tricky. From styling to maintenance, they can either elevate your space or become a cluttered eyesore.
You might even worry: Will it look too busy? Or too beautiful to actually use?

So, how do you style open shelves in a way that combines both beauty and functionality?Â
Here are 5 Practical Tips to Style Open Shelves to help you create a look that’s both Instagram-worthy and livable.
1. Start with a Color Scheme
The key to cohesive open shelves is a consistent color palette. Choose a color scheme that ties everything together and complements the surrounding space. In the shelves we styled, we stuck with neutral tones and an earthy green backdrop to create a calming and unified look.
2. Incorporate Functional Items
Don’t be afraid to add items that you actually use! Functionality doesn’t have to be boring. For instance, we added wine glasses—not something used every day but often enough for our household (sigh) —and breakfast bowls that we reach for every morning. It’s all about making your open shelves work for you while still looking stylish.
3. Play with Heights and Layers
Adding visual interest is key to keeping your shelves from feeling flat. Incorporate items of different heights—like vases, glasses, and bowls—to create a dynamic arrangement. Mixing tall and short objects adds depth and keeps the eye moving, which is a must for open shelves.
4. Add Intentional Art
Art is a great way to add personality and a sense of story to your shelves. Pick pieces that are meaningful to you, whether it’s vintage art, a cool abstract piece, or something sentimental.
In our kitchen, we have a small artwork of two kids fishing—a nod to my hope that our kids will enjoy such simple pleasures one day. Another piece is a snapshot of our favorite fountain from a Paris trip.
Art adds character and brings those special memories into your daily life. Don't shy away from framing your art with a stylish, eye-catching frame.

5. Incorporate Floral Elements
Flowers (real or faux) are always a win for open shelves. They add softness, warmth, and a welcoming feel to any space. We used dried flowers from our own garden, which brought a personal, seasonal touch to the decor.
Flowers can be switched out seasonally or whenever you feel like freshening up the look.
Open shelves are the perfect place to showcase your personality, but they should also work for your lifestyle. The trick is to find that sweet spot where beauty meets practicality. Don’t be afraid to mix decorative pieces with everyday essentials, and always aim for a balance of style and function.

Styling open shelves is about creating a space that’s both visually appealing and usable. With a thoughtful approach, you can turn your open shelves into a stunning focal point that also serves your daily needs.
