While I love minimalist neutral design, I also can not stop admiring the creativity, aesthetics, and flexibility of an eclectic gallery wall.
Designing spaces is about being intentional. So I believe we can both use a grid style black and white gallery walls for spaces that needs a calm, minimalist design; and an eclectic gallery wall to add interesting as an accent wall.
For our home office in our sun room, my mission was to create an interesting visual story through bringing different styles under cohesive color palette. Mixing old and new...
It has been a slow process of evolving and living wall design. I kept on extending the boundaries of the gallery. I am sharing my journey here, hoping it will encourage you to explore yours!
It started like this, last year.
Then evolved to this (added new vintage art pieces below).
Then recently evolved to this, going all the way to almost floor!
And, here are five tips that helped me to create an eclectic gallery wall;
Start with deciding on a color palette and a vibe / style. Ours is mainly led by Gold, Black and White materials; I wanted to keep that brass feeling. While adding some soft green touches.
Mix different sizes and materials while keeping a rhythm and some repeat. Here we mixed black metal frames with gold frames and vintage textured wood.
Add art that speaks to you while complementing them with mirrors or objects. Some vintage hunting and Etsy shopping will help! I had many vintage finds like small framed stamps and portraits of women. In addition to that I had printed my favorite scene from 'Breakfast at Tiffanies' - the one on the top. This sparks joy for me.
Lay them on the floor to design and decide the main placement. Then start with an anchor piece.
Keep it flowing, it can reach even to the floor if you want an impactful accent wall. This had evolved over a year!
Here are two design boards that I curated for your ease! Maybe these can also help you kick off this project?
