Welcome back to our journey of turning our house into the dream home we've always envisioned!
In Part 3 of our series, we're diving into the exciting transformation of our sunroom.
This space holds a special place in our hearts as we aim to create a captivating design that seamlessly blends with the overall style and color scheme of our home.
If you haven't already, make sure to watch the video where I share my renovation plans and vision for this space. It's all about bringing our ideas to life and crafting a harmonious living environment.
The Sunroom: Where Design Meets Playfulness
Among all the areas in our home, the sunroom is undoubtedly the most enjoyable to design. Here, we had the opportunity to infuse a dash of creativity while maintaining a connection to the design aesthetics of the adjacent rooms.
As part of the design process, I decided to involve our wonderful Instagram community in making a crucial decision.
I was torn between two intriguing options: the allure of Mediterranean-style terracotta tiles, with their rustic charm that brings a touch of the outdoors inside, and the classic elegance of checkered board tiles, promising a refined and elevated atmosphere.
After a thrilling vote, checkered board tiles emerged as the winner, resonating with our shared vision.
The Transition and Cohesiveness: A Bold Statement with Checkered Tile
One thing I was certain about was the need for a striking transition between the sunroom and the rest of the main floor.
To achieve this, I envisaged a dramatic contrast between the wood oak-colored floors of the kitchen and living room and the captivating checkered board pattern of the sunroom.
But that wasn't all; I wanted to emphasize the cohesiveness even further.
Painting the window frames and French doors in a sleek black hue was the perfect touch to achieve the seamless flow I had in mind.
Here in this rendering below, you will see my vision in 3D format!
3D design helped me feel more confident about the decision and also helped with the briefing of the general contractor.
The Quest for the Perfect Material and Design
Embarking on a journey to find the ideal materials was an exhilarating adventure. Here's a glimpse into the decisions that shaped our sunroom's transformation:
1. Choosing the Stone: Marble vs. Porcelain
Marble exudes luxury, but with kids in the picture, practicality takes the lead. Porcelain emerged as a reliable choice, offering both durability and the potential for stunning marble-like textures.
2. Square Dimensions: A Delicate Balance
With a sunroom size of around 200 square feet, selecting the right square dimensions was paramount.
After poring over examples and Pinterest boards, I was inspired by Studio McGee's sophisticated diagonal layout.
3. Discovering the Perfect Tile: Merola Checkered Ruzzini Porcelain Tile
After careful consideration, I stumbled upon the Merola Checkered Ruzzini Porcelain Tile – a true gem that ticked all the boxes. It offered the allure of stormy gray tones instead of dominant black squares, allowing for a smoother contrast.
I ordered the tiles from Home Depot, and it's also available on Wayfair for those interested.
Ordering and Installation Wisdom: TIP & TRICKS!
The journey from selecting the perfect tile to its installation was sprinkled with lessons and insights:
- Ordering Extras: It's wise to order around 20% more tiles than required. This not only accounts for the edges but also cushions against any unexpected breakage during delivery.
- Tile Layout: Each tile comes as four pieces, with an overall size of 18” x 18” and individual squares measuring 9” x 9”. The diagonal layout we chose began from the black point edge, creating a seamless transition from the kitchen entry to the sunroom. Picture below...
From Sterile to Sublime: The Transformation Unveiled
The moment of truth arrived as the sunroom floor was adorned with the mesmerizing checkered board pattern. The impact was astonishing. The once sterile white room now emanates a sense of modern luxury and sophistication that effortlessly elevates the entire space.
And while the furniture for this room has yet to find its place, the design concept is already dancing in my mind. I envision infusing warmth through greenery, introducing light wood and the soothing textures of rattan. This will beautifully balance the sleek elegance of the tiles, culminating in a space where form and function harmoniously intertwine.
Stay tuned for the next chapter in our journey, where we delve into the heart of our home—the kitchen, where we embarked on a full remodel to create a culinary haven that seamlessly blends style and functionality.
Until then, keep dreaming, designing, and bringing your vision to life!
