What if your basement could feel like a luxury European cottage retreat?

That’s exactly what we did with Project Martha, transforming an unfinished basement into a fully designed, layered space for a busy family of four.

In this blog, you will find all the reasons, thoughts, and timeline!

This basement isn’t just a lower-level area; it’s a complete secondary living experience, thoughtfully curated by Design & Curations Interior Design Studio (us, hello!) based in Atlanta, to support slowing down, settling in, and connecting as a family.

Every detail, from layout to finishes to furniture, was intentionally layered to create a luxurious yet livable retreat.

Let's go!

The Concept: Feeling

When we started designing the Martha Project basement, the feeling we want to create & goal was simple but powerful: Slow Down. Settle In. Connect.

The BRIEF was simple (well, challenging?): Make this basement feel nothing like a basement. We want to feel we are on a vacation in our own HOME.

So WE DID just that: a warm, inviting retreat that could serve as a European-inspired cottage inside a suburban Atlanta, Alpharetta home.

We focused on creating a space that blends:

  • Function and beauty

  • Soft textures and bold contrasts

  • Relaxed, comfortable vibes with refined details

The concept guided everything — from the walls and openings to finishes, lighting, and furniture — ensuring every piece works together like a puzzle.

Alexis and Burcu (me!) dreaming big pink dreams... Imagining what this could be.

Even though this kitchen lives in the basement, we designed it to feel intentional, layered, and charming.

The kind of place where you grab a pastry, pour coffee, and sit by the window.

The design balances contrast and softness: curved yet structured, textured yet smooth, bold yet calm.

Some of the elements that bring this relaxed European feel to life include:

  • A scalloped granite backsplash profile that creates a beautiful focal point on the range wall

  • Fluted sconces that add romantic lighting and softness

  • A mini shiplap wall for subtle cottage texture

  • A petite café table and chairs for morning coffee moments

  • A custom channeled bench cushion that feels both tailored and cozy

Let's get into the spaces. Shall we?

Café-style kitchen:

Dove-colored cabinets, scalloped stone backsplash layered below an organic-shaped limestone wall, fluted sconces, and a custom channeled bench.

Perfect for coffee, croissants, and casual family mornings.

More about the kitchen, we wrote a blog on this BEAUTIFUL room recently. You can read five features we are obsessed with in this kitchen here.

One of the design intentions was to create a little café moment inside the kitchen. The pedestal oak table, café chairs, and window seating create a spot where the family can pause — whether it’s coffee in the morning, homework in the afternoon, or wine after the kids go to bed.

It’s small, but it carries the entire spirit of the project: slow living and connection.

Romantic kitchen. Two cozy dining nooks; left has a round table with red patterned bench, right a dark leather bench with flowers. Bright, serene ambiance.

A Family Room That Connects THE FAMILY, no TV.

Cozy electric fireplace, layered seating, and built-ins with arched niches. Where they connect, play chess, do puzzles, and SLOW DOWN. The family room and fireplace moment, where the slow-down feeling continues. They play puzzles, chess, and more!

Living Room with Cozy TV Watching Moment.

The custom built-ins, arches on the side, the cabinets for storage, and hide-away clutter.

A deep, big sectional and plush rug to welcome long movie nights.

Dry bar + Game lounge: For FUN and Entertainment

Fun, functional, and family-friendly. Table tennis was the last item came to the room, as it was sourced by our client with utmost care! He loves playing table tennis with his sons. We love it.

We also designed a little ledge to sit and drink while watching people play.

Mirror wall with tile with three CUTEST sconces. Hello!

Basement Bar, mirror wall
Dry bar, custom cabinets, Oak and emeral green tiles.

Powder Room is the JEWEL

Green checkerboard floors and bold, color-drenched walls.

The jewel of the space, pop and surprise. We used marble floor tiles, but we balanced the investment with a pre-made vanity, which looks so beautiful and contrasts perfectly.

Guest En-Suite: Bedroom & Bathroom

Spa-like Bathroom: A calming retreat for adults and kids alike. Simple yet refined, the apron front for the counter, and wall-mounted faucet. Tan color to add some depth and warmth.

Guest bedroom: Seamless in design, calm, and minimalist. Black nightstands and unique wall sconces for extra poses.

Each space was designed by us, Design & Curations, Atlanta interior design studio to balance comfort, luxury, and European-inspired charm.

Some of Our Favorite Features That You Should Def Consider for Your Own Renovation!

  1. Café-style interior window: perfect for keeping an eye on the TV while enjoying breakfast.

  2. Custom channeled bench: combines function and beauty flawlessly.

  3. Scalloped granite backsplash on the range wall: dramatic black granite softened with limestone on top for movement and visual interest.

  4. Shiplap shelving with brass brackets: relaxed yet refined details on the sink wall.

  5. Pushed-out cabinets: subtle drama and symmetry on the range wall.

  6. Mirror Tile on the wall for extra Luxe & Lounge.

  7. Entry Beams: overflow on the sides.

  8. Color Drench in Powder Room: Add extra jewel pop, and unexpected color. The checker timeless touch, this time it is green marble x cream color.

We can hear you asking: How Long DID THIS Take?

In April, 2025 Clients reached out and we had our first consultation. Then we kicked off!

  1. May 2025: Project confirmed.

  2. July 2025: Design kickoff — site visits, inspiration boards, lifestyle discussion, and initial floor plan edits.

  3. Aug–Sept 2025: 3D renders, finishes, fixtures, and builder specs finalized.

  4. Oct 2025 – Jan 2026: Construction phase — biweekly site visits for electrical walkthroughs, cabinet planning, and custom feature reviews.

  5. Feb 2026: Installation, final styling, and photoshoot.

Seeing the space completed was a full-circle moment — every idea, sketch, and plan finally became a tangible, livable space.

Project Martha Basement is a perfect example of this process — from concept to construction, every decision was layered to create a luxurious yet livable space.

Every project has moments that stay with us: For Project Martha, it was seeing the family connect, gather, and enjoy every corner of their new basement retreat. That’s why we love what we do.

Best part of the project was the last day after install, clients said:

“I think we will move down stairs, it is better than our main floor.”  That warmed our hearts.
