How We Maximized a 50-Square-Foot Laundry Room: 6 Small-Space Ideas That Work Hard

Laundry room, mudroom, drop zone, charging station - and yes, we still made it pretty.

Have a tiny laundry room and feel like there is never enough space for everything your family drops at the door? This one is for you.

Our Project Zen With a Twist laundry room is only about 50 square feet, but we wanted it to work like a much bigger room. Laundry, folding, drying, coats, mail, keys, sunglasses, charging... all of it needed a home.

Keep reading because I'm breaking down six ideas we used to squeeze function out of almost every inch, including my favorite little 3 - 4" deep wall niche that might be the hardest-working detail in the room.

1. Combine Your Laundry Room + Mudroom

When square footage is limited, rooms need to multitask. Rather than treating this as just a laundry room, we designed it as the family's everyday drop zone too.

Closed cabinetry gives coats, bags, laundry supplies, and all the not-so-pretty things somewhere to disappear.

2. Give Yourself a Real Folding Counter

This sounds obvious, but it's one of the first things to disappear when laundry rooms get small.

We prioritized a countertop directly above the washer and dryer, creating a proper folding and sorting surface without using any additional floor space.

If you're renovating a small laundry room, look vertically and ask: What can the space above my machines do for me?

3. Add a Drying Rack Without Sacrificing Floor Space

Another must-have for us was a dedicated drying area. Instead of bringing in a freestanding rack that would immediately take over this little room, we incorporated drying functionality into the wall/cabinetry.

It's there when you need it and out of the way when you don't.

Exactly what a 50-square-foot room needs.

4. Use the Space INSIDE Your Wall

Okay, this might be my favorite detail. We had approximately 3–4 inches of unused wall depth, so we turned it into a recessed family command center.

Three little shelves provide a landing spot for phones, mail, sunglasses, keys, and everyday grab-and-go items, with an outlet incorporated for charging. We painted the entire niche Sherwin-Williams Retreat, matching the cabinetry, so something incredibly functional also became an intentional design detail.

Honestly, this might be one of the most functional walls we've ever designed.

Lesson: When you're short on square footage, don't just look around the room. Look inside the walls, too.

5. Sneak Storage Into the Smallest Places

Not every storage solution needs to be custom cabinetry.

Those sweet little rattan wall baskets add another layer of practical storage without taking up an inch of floor space. They're perfect for small items that need to be accessible—and they add warmth against the striped wallpaper.

6. And PLEASE Make the Laundry Room Pretty

If you're going to spend this much time doing laundry, you might as well enjoy looking at the room. :)

We paired checkerboard flooring, delicate striped wallpaper, deep green cabinetry and trim, warm brass details, and a whimsical ceiling light.

The pattern-on-pattern combination gives this tiny room personality, while repeating the green keeps everything feeling cohesive. Small rooms are actually some of my favorite places to have a little more fun.
