A bonus room doesn’t have to be just another “kids’ space.” With intentional interior design, it can become a stylish, functional playroom that grows with your children and still feels like an extension of your home.
That was exactly our goal when we redesigned a family’s bonus room in Atlanta—turning a chaotic corner into a modern, inviting space that works for everyone. Here’s how we did it:
1. Smart Storage That Keeps the Room Clean
Open playrooms often turn into clutter zones. The solution? Hidden storage that works hard without sacrificing style.
We designed two perfectly sized cabinets with eight doors to tuck away toys and essentials. This keeps the room organized and calm while still being accessible for kids. A woven basket trunk adds texture and a pop of color—it doubles as storage or extra seating when family and friends gather.
Pro tip I: Choose cabinetry in finishes that complement the rest of your home so the playroom feels cohesive, not separate.
2. Flexible Seating for Family Time
Family playrooms should work for everyone, not just the kids. That’s why flexible seating is key.
We added four cozy, curvy swivel chairs that make curling up for story time or movie night easy. Because they’re modular and movable, the family can reconfigure the room depending on the activity—whether it’s playtime, reading, or relaxing.
Pro tip II: Swivel chairs or lightweight ottomans make it simple to adjust the layout without heavy lifting.
3. Interactive & Accessible Design for Kids
A smart playroom encourages independence and creativity.
We installed lowered shelving so kids can grab their favorite books and toys on their own. Picture ledges showcase rotating artwork, letting little artists display their latest creations while keeping the space fresh and personal.
To ground the room, we chose a durable performance rug with playful lines—soft enough for floor play, but stylish enough to age gracefully with the family.
4. Timeless Touches & Personalization
The best playrooms don’t feel temporary. They flow seamlessly with the rest of the home.
A scalloped coffee table brings elegance and echoes the architectural arches found throughout the main floor. A gallery grid wall is planned for family black-and-white photos, giving the room a personal, timeless touch.
Clean lines, balanced curves, and layered textures ensure the space feels modern yet inviting—never overly childish.
The Final Result: New Age Playroom
The transformed bonus room is now clear, functional, and beautifully balanced. Kids have space to play freely. Parents have a cozy spot to gather. And the design will evolve with the family—never feeling dated or limited to a “kids’ only zone.”
