Hello Hello!
Today, I want to talk about the Riverhill Project—a beautiful example of how to style an organic modern living room, in the context of the "Weekly Design Tips" series.
I often hear: "I want clean but not boring space. What is that style?" If that is sound like you, then Organic Modern is just for you!
Join me as we explore the design elements that brought warmth, elegance, and a cozy atmosphere to Susana and Juan’s new home in Atlanta.
Earthy Elegance: Behind the Riverhill Project
Moving to a new city can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially when it comes to designing and furnishing a new home.
For Susana and Juan, a lovely couple with an adorable toddler, the goal was to create a warm, inviting, and cohesive space that reflected their love for earthy, organic styles. With our Full eDesign Package, they were able to actively participate in the design process while receiving expert guidance from us.
Elements of Organic Modern Design
Before we dive into the specifics of the Riverhill living room, let's review the key elements that define an organic modern style:
Natural Textures: Incorporate materials like wood, stone, and rattan to add warmth and character. See my previous blog post on elements to mix to juice up the space. Blog: How to Add Interest and Texture to Neutral Modern Homes: 4 Textures I Love
Earthy Color Palette: Stick to earthy tones and neutral colors to keep the space serene and cohesive, brown, sage green, white, tan, camel, and pops of black are welcome!
Curvy Furniture: Opt for furniture with soft, rounded edges to create a welcoming vibe.
Greenery is a MUST: Bring in plants and trees to add life and a touch of nature.
Unique Lighting: Opt in for lighting fixtures that double as art pieces.
Prioritize Open, Clean Layouts: Keep the space uncluttered and airy to maintain a modern feel. If you have a toddler like me, you can have destinations for play areas and designated storage units. It is okay some days to be messy, the point is everything should have a place to be stored.
Let's dig into an example. Organic Modern: Styling the Riverhill Living Room
Tip 1: Natural Textures
The heart of the Riverhill home is the living room, where we incorporated a variety of natural textures to create a cozy and inviting space.
A standout piece is the elegant and unique rattan bar cabinet from Crate & Barrel. This not only adds storage but also introduces a beautiful organic texture.
The rattan details can be seen through out the room including relaxed armchairs from Anthropology, creating a serene and comfortable environment perfect for family gatherings.
Tip 2: Minimalist Color Palette
We adhered to a minimalist color palette, focusing on earthy tones and neutrals. This choice ensured a calming and cohesive look, allowing the natural textures to shine. The walls were kept neutral to provide a perfect backdrop for the various organic elements in the room.
Tip 3: Soft Lines in Furniture
To enhance the cozy feel, we selected furniture with soft, rounded edges. The relaxed armchairs from Anthropology are not only comfortable but also contribute to the inviting atmosphere of the room.
Tip 4: Bring Nature In
Greenery plays a vital role in organic modern design. While real plants add freshness, faux trees were chosen for this project due to their low maintenance and lasting beauty.
This is a minimalist citrus tree from Pottery Barn. We loved it.
They seamlessly blend into the space, adding a natural touch that’s hard to beat.
Tip 5: Unique Lighting
Lighting is key in any design, and for the Riverhill living room, we opted for sculptural lighting fixtures that double as art pieces. These fixtures not only illuminate the space but also add an element of sophistication and elegance.
Below you will see a unique vowen chandelier adds warmth to the space.
Tip 6: Open, Clean Layout
Finally, we prioritized an open and clean layout. By keeping the space uncluttered and airy, we maintained the modern feel while allowing the organic elements to take center stage. This clear layout helps to provide a feeling of calmness.
The Riverhill Living Room: A Cozy and Inviting Retreat
The living room in the Riverhill project exemplifies how to style an organic modern space that is both cozy and inviting. By incorporating natural textures, a minimalist color palette, soft lines in furniture, greenery, sculptural lighting, and an open layout, we created a harmonious and welcoming environment for Susana, Juan, and their toddler.
How Do They Feel About the Journey?
Susana and Juan loved being involved in the design process. "We were worried we wouldn’t be involved in the process… for us, it was very important to find a designer that allowed us to flow with the process and interact closely with them," they shared. They appreciated our Hybrid Design Service, which allowed them to collaborate and feel part of the process while following our expert guidance.
Whether you're moving to a new city or simply looking to refresh your living spaces, the Riverhill project demonstrates how an interior designer can bring your dream home to life while ensuring your active involvement in the process.
As always, thank you for joining me on this design journey.
Love,
