Hello there!
For those who follow me on Instagram, you voted for this one! You asked for design tips for the living room. Here it is! With these steps, you can add much character and depth to your space. I always do these in any of my projects. I listed 5 key tips to add a designer feel.
Let's get to it
1. Lay That Rug Wide Enough
Rugs are more than just cozy underfoot—they're design game-changers! A common mistake is picking a rug that's too small.
Aim for a rug large enough to fit all the key furniture pieces in your seating area. At least half, ideally two-thirds, of your sofa or chairs should sit on the rug.
This trick instantly elevates your space. For more on avoiding small rug mistakes, check out my earlier post [here]!
Pro Tip: Add a rug pad for extra comfort. It's like walking on clouds and keeps the rug from shifting.
2. Layered Lighting: More Than Just a Chandelier
Lighting is everything in design, especially in neutral spaces. Layered lighting involves using multiple light sources like chandeliers, sconces, floor lamps, and table lamps. Aim for at least three sources to create a warm, inviting ambiance.
Have you seen how some couples make it look so fun? Plus, battery-operated sconces are a game-changer—no electrician needed!
Here is a blog post, where we unpack how to layer the lighting in detail: Check this out: Crafting Drama with Light Layering
And Josh & Matt explain why we shouldn't rely heavily on BIG LIGHT only, in their super fun reel. I love how they are so fun and right!
3. Mix Elements: Beyond Just Wood
Mixing materials adds visual interest and makes a room feel inviting. Think beyond wood; incorporate metal, marble, and rattan. This skillful mix creates a space that's rich in personality and visually appealing. It is scary, but you got this!
One combination for illustration: Oak & Travertine & Rattan & Brass. Never disapoints :)
You have so many other combinations. That is the most fun part. Mixing and Matching. I will admit, it is tricky.

4. Plants and Natural Colors: Bring Life Into the Room
Now, the earthy one: Plants
They breathe life into any space. Big tropical trees or olive trees are fantastic, but if your room lacks light, faux plants are a great alternative. They add the same lush feel without the maintenance.
I love Nearly Natural for its soft, realistic trees, and Afloral for its perfect stems.
5. Personal Touches: Make It Yours
Adding personal touches like family photos, travel souvenirs, or unique art pieces makes the space feel truly yours.
These elements tell your story and make the room special. And that is what really maters. You step into a room and feel like you are HOME.
Quick Recap:
- Rugs: Size matters—let the furniture sit on the rug.
- Lighting: Layer different light sources for a cozy feel.
- Materials: Mix wood, metal, marble, and rattan.
- Plants: Real or faux, plants add life.
- Personal Touches: Make the space your own with unique items.
With these simple tricks, your living room will look like it has a designer's touch.
