In Project Farm Luxe, we transformed a former garage into an English cottage-inspired kitchen designed for a busy family of four - complete with a cozy café nook, custom hood, hidden storage, and timeless details that work beautifully for everyday life. Part 2: How We Designed an English Cottage Kitchen for a Busy Family: 10 Practical Kitchen Renovation Ideas & Sources


A beautiful kitchen isn't just about cabinetry—it's about creating a space that works beautifully for everyday life.


When we started designing the kitchen for Project Farm Luxe, we weren't chasing trends or trying to recreate a Pinterest photo.


Instead, we asked one simple question: "How does this family actually live?"


With two young children, several animals, grandparents who visit often, and a love for cooking and gathering, every decision had to balance beauty with function.


Here are ten renovation ideas we used to create an English cottage-inspired kitchen that feels timeless, practical, and welcoming.


  1. Rethink Your Kitchen Layout During a Home Renovation


One of the biggest transformations in this home wasn't the cabinetry - it was relocating the kitchen entirely. We converted the former garage into the new kitchen, creating a much better relationship between the kitchen, dining room, living room, and mudroom.


Sometimes the most impactful renovation decision isn't selecting finishes; it's rethinking the layout itself. Using the triangle principle (Triangle = Sink + Fridge + Range) and deciding on a focal wall and going all in on symmetry, and more

We love a picture window over the sink moment.


It was a perfect opportunity for it, giving the couple an opportunity to view the kids and their backyard while washing the dishes. Small decisions like this make daily life feel more enjoyable. Deciding on a focal wall, in our case the range, was the starting point for the entire kitchen design. From there, every other element naturally fell into place.

2. Design for Connection, Not Just Open Concept

Rather than removing every wall, we introduced transom arches that allow light and conversations to flow while giving each room its own identity.


It feels open, but still intentional and cozy.







3. Create a Cozy Breakfast Nook

Instead of filling the kitchen with a large island seating area, we created a charming breakfast nook where the family can gather for coffee, homework, and weekend pancakes.


It also offers a storage solution with drawers under the banquette. Its swoop look is a cohesive detail you will see throughout including the Custom Range Hood.


We added a shiplap wall to bring the cozy cottage feel and warm up those tall walls behind the banquette. 


The fabric for the cushions is Sunbrella, perfect for high-functioning spots. 


And the final beautiful touch was her vintage plate collection on the wall!


4. Invest in Architectural Details

Luxury often lives in the details. The custom plaster hood, double ogee countertop edge, and carefully layered lighting make the kitchen feel collected rather than newly installed.


These are the kinds of elements that quietly elevate a space. While they may not be the first thing someone notices, together they create the timeless character that makes a home feel custom.


5. Choose Finishes That Complement One Another

Instead of one color, we did ivory for the perimeter and walnut for the island. Along with that, we added a warm oak breakfast table and lots of brass details. 


The Lumataj quartz made the kitchen's brown and ivory accents melt together beautifully. We included woven stools and rattan chairs to add a more relaxed feel, pairing with brass light details. The combination of warm walnut, natural stone, brass, and woven textures creates an organic modern kitchen design that feels both relaxed and elevated.


The layering of complementary materials and finishes provides balance and keeps the kitchen from feeling flat or overly designed.



6. Add Smart Storage Where You Need It Most

Pull-outs beside the range.

Deep drawers below the cooktop.

Easy-access storage.

Drawers under the banquette.

If possible, a walk-in pantry Is a must. 


When storage is thoughtfully planned, everything has a place, from cooking utensils to lunch boxes and small appliances. It makes the kitchen easier to maintain and much more enjoyable to use every day.


Designing around daily routines always wins.


7. Use Durable Materials Without Sacrificing Style

With children, dogs, and everyday life, we selected durable porcelain flooring in the mudroom, quartz in the kitchen counters, and Sunbrella fabric in the breakfast banquette- finishes that still feel luxurious.


Choosing materials that can withstand spills, muddy paws, and everyday wear means they can actually enjoy their kitchen without constantly worrying about it.


8. Let Lighting Create the Mood

Lighting should be both functional and beautiful. By combining task, ambient, and decorative lighting, the space feels comfortable at every time of day.


Layering decorative lighting makes a kitchen feel welcoming from early morning coffee to late-night conversations. The sconce over the sink and the beautiful modern lantern pendants from Visual Comfort are really adding such a luxe feeling.


9. Let the Landscape Inspire the Palette

Drawing colors from the landscape helps a home feel rooted in its surroundings instead of disconnected from them, creating a sense of calm that never goes out of style.


The surrounding farm became our biggest inspiration.

Soft greens. Taupe. Warm woods.


Everything connects the interior back to the countryside outside.






10. Drawer Microwave is a Win

Using the island to hide the microwave is something we include in many of our projects whenever possible. To me, it is a no-brainer. In this case, the Café double ovens fit beautifully into the cabinetry, while a standard microwave would have interrupted the softer cottage aesthetic. A drawer microwave allowed us to keep the functionality without compromising the overall design.


It's one of those small upgrades that has a surprisingly big impact on keeping the kitchen feeling clean, intentional, and timeless.
