How to Style Your Home Like an Interior Designer | 5 Easy Styling Tips

Have you ever walked into a beautifully styled home and wondered, “How does it feel so put together?” The good news? It usually isn't about buying more décor.

Great home styling is less about filling every surface and more about creating balance, layering textures, and choosing pieces that feel connected to the room.

In this blog, I'm sharing five home styling principles we use in our Design & Curations projects. These simple, practical tips will help you style your coffee table, bookshelves, and accessories with more confidence ~ creating a home that feels calm, cozy, and collected.

Whether you've just moved into a new home, finished a renovation, or simply want to refresh your space, these interior styling tips are a great place to start.

1. Start With the Room, Not the Décor

One of the biggest styling mistakes I see is buying beautiful accessories before looking at the room itself.

Instead, ask yourself: What story is this room already telling?

If your home feels light and coastal, keep the styling soft and relaxed. If it's moodier with darker woods and rich colors, let your décor reflect that feeling too. I always carry the room's existing colors into the styling. Sometimes that's through pillows, a throw blanket, artwork, or a simple ceramic vase.

When the accessories echo the furniture and finishes, everything immediately feels more intentional. The goal isn't for every piece to match. It's for everything to feel like it belongs together.

2. Use the Rule of Three

If there's one styling trick I use almost every day, it's the rule of three.

When styling a coffee table, I almost always create three different heights:

A taller element: usually a vase with fresh flowers or branches.
A medium-height object: like a candle, decorative box, or bowl.
A lower layer: usually a stack of coffee table books.

Then, instead of scattering little pieces across the entire surface, I think about creating three intentional groupings across the table.

Simple. Balanced. Easy on the eye.

This same principle works beyond coffee tables, too. Try it when styling a console table, nightstand, or open shelving!

3. Mix Textures, Not Just Objects

When styling a room, I rarely use the same material over and over.

Instead, I like mixing textures and finishes.

Marble with wood.
Ceramic with woven baskets.
Paper mâché with brass.
Glass with linen.

Texture brings warmth and depth without making a room feel busy. Often, a room doesn't need more décor ~ it simply needs more variety.

If your space feels flat, try adding a new material before adding another object. A woven basket, linen pillow, natural wood accent, or ceramic piece can completely change how a room feels.

4. Let Your Shelves "Talk"

Bookshelves can feel overwhelming, but they don't have to.

One trick I use is what I call the zigzag rule.

If I place a black vase on the top shelf, I'll repeat that black somewhere lower down. Maybe it's a picture frame, a bowl, or another decorative object. The same goes for wood, greenery, pottery, or other materials.

Repeating colors and materials helps your eye naturally move across the shelves, making everything feel connected. This creates a sense of rhythm without making your bookshelf feel overly coordinated.

And don't forget... Leave a little empty space.

Not every shelf needs to be full. Sometimes the breathing room is what makes the styling feel elevated.

5. Tell Your Story

This is my favorite styling rule. I like to think about styling as a 70/30 balance.

About 70% of the styling creates the overall look and feel of the room.

The remaining 30% should be personal.

Family photos.

A favorite travel souvenir.

A handmade bowl.

Your grandmother's candlesticks.

Books you actually love reading.

Those are the pieces that make a home feel collected instead of decorated.

They're also the pieces that spark conversations when friends come over.

Your home shouldn't look like a showroom.

The best interiors have personality, and that personality comes from the people who live there.

My Final Tip

The most beautiful homes aren't finished in a weekend. They evolve over time. Collect pieces you genuinely love, leave room for new memories, and don't feel like every surface needs to be filled.

A home should grow with you. I think that's what makes a space feel truly timeless.
